Propane Tanks - Maintenance

Whether you own or lease your tank from Tevis, our trained delivery drivers check your propane tank for safety issues during every delivery. You should also keep watch for any issues that might develop between deliveries. Should you discover or suspect damage or tampering, please call us immediately.

Tanks will age differently depending on their quality and location. For underground tanks, factors such as soil composition and moisture can affect their life span. Therefore, expert installation of a high-quality tank is critical.

If you lease your propane tank from Tevis, we are responsible for all regular tank maintenance, as specified in your lease agreement.

Whether you own or lease your propane tank from Tevis, these bullets will help you ensure the safety and prolong the life of your propane tank:

Check your aboveground tank regularly for signs of wear or damage.
Take all precautions to protect your tank from damage (i.e. bicycles, garbage cans, and other objects that can harm your tank or its components).
If you see surface rust developing, clean the area and paint it with a light-colored, reflective enamel paint intended for metal. Be careful not to paint valves or gauges.
Use caution around propane supply lines, especially while weed-whacking, planting, or other digging.
Always keep any outdoor ignition sources at least 10 feet from your storage tank. (Examples of ignition sources include outdoor grills, fire pits, fireworks, lighters, etc.)
Never tamper with the regulators on the tank or on the house. Doing so can cause pressure fluctuations and damage appliances.
Never force or use tools to open a valve.
Never seal off the top of an underground tank’s dome or enclose an aboveground tank in a confined or air-tight space. Doing so can prevent the tank’s relief valve from venting.
Never drive heavy equipment over an underground tank or its immediate surroundings.

Please read the Propane Safety Instructions for other important information about propane use.
