How do I know if I smell propane or natural gas...

Propane and natural gas smell alike, therefore the only way to tell the difference is to know how gas is delivered to your home.

Propane is delivered to your home periodically by a fuel company, such as Tevis Oil, and is stored in a propane tank on your property. Some tanks are installed underground. If your propane tank is underground, a metal “dome” will be located on your property directly above the underground tank. These domes are often painted green.

Natural gas is sold to you by a public utility company, such as BGE, and is piped to your home via their public utility infrastructure.

If you are still unsure, check your BGE utility statement to see if it includes any gas charges.
