At that time worldwide consumption was about 50 million barrels per day, which meant that proven reserves could last 32 years. By 1993, proven world reserves had almost doubled (to 1000 billion barrels), and daily world consumption was 60 million barrels. This meant there was enough oil to last an additional 45 years! Reserves continue to keep pace with consumption, mainly because new technologies have made it possible to find and extract oil more efficiently, and from places never before possible. Heating oil is one of the safest fuels ever developed. It won't burn in a liquid state. If a lit match were dropped into it, the oil would extinguish the flame, just like water does! To be ignited, oil must be vaporized. This only occurs under pressure at 140°F. Properly set and maintained oil burners produce very low, safe levels of carbon monoxide as a normal part of the combustion process. And if there is ever a malfunction in your heating system, there's little or no need to worry about an explosion or carbon monoxide fumes.
