Tevis Oil and Modern Comfort Systems are guided by the same tradition of quality, affordability and personal service that Stanley H. Tevis started in 1932. That was the year he became a representative for Gulf Oil.
A native of Philadelphia, Stanley established S.H. Tevis in Westminster, MD selling gasoline, heating oil, and diesel fuel to the residents of Carroll County’s local towns and surrounding farming communities. Having previously been served out of Frederick, MD, the community embraced its new and very likeable entrepreneur, who brought new levels of convenience and service to them.
In 1933, Stanley's son, Stan Jr., left his sales job in New York City to help his father with the business.
A few years later, Stan Jr. took leave from the family business and served in World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was a naval oil supply officer in the South Pacific. Back home, Stan Sr. continued to manage the business with the help of three employees.
Upon Stan Jr’s return from the War, father and son set out to expand the business. Carroll County’s post-war growth provided fertile ground for their vision.
 They opened several Gulf service stations, expanded oil delivery and heating services, and in 1953 the company, appropriately, became a partnership under the name "S.H. Tevis & Son."
Stanley Tevis, Sr. died in 1963. Stan Jr. incorporated the business under the same name, and continued their work to strengthen and expand the business. Over the next 10 years, the company grew to 15 employees, served approximately 1500 heating oil customers, and sold over 5 million gallons of gasoline per year through its service station dealers.
When Stan, Jr. died suddenly in 1974, the family made the decision to continue the business under the leadership of Stanley’s wife, Dorothy Tevis and their son, Stanley H. Tevis III (better known as “Jack”).
Today Jack serves as President and CEO of S.H. Tevis & Son, and the hard work of three generations continues to bear fruit. The company now employs over 275 employees, serves over 11,000 heating oil, 1000 propane and 15,000 heating and air conditioning customers throughout Carroll, Baltimore, Howard and Frederick counties, and distributes gasoline products through ten service stations, and its five JiffyMart convenience stores!
By remaining true to the principles upon which the company was founded, while looking for new and practical ways to serve the needs of its communities, Tevis Oil continues to earn its reputation for outstanding service to its many customers and the community. |
